Frequently asked questions:
- Does the treatment hurt? - Many patients describe a pinching or snapping sensation that lasts for only a fraction of a second, followed by a feeling of warmth or tingling.
- What happens after a treatment? - Temporary redness and "bumpiness" (swelling of the hair follicle), which may give the appearance of a rash. You can resume normal activity immediately.
- Who cannot be treated?- If you have a tan, you need to wait for it to fade. This includes "bottle" tans and spray tans. You need to avoid tanning at all in the area being treated for the entire course of the treatment. This is because the pigment of the tan draws light away from the hair follicle and into the skin. The treatments also make the area more sun sensitive for a time.
Hair must have pigment (color) for treatment to be effective. White or blond hair will often not respond. The darker the hair, the more effective the treatment.
- Why are multiple sessions needed? - It takes more that one treatment in an area to affect all of the follicles, because hair grows in cycles. Follicles which have been effectively treated during a given session will shed their hair approx. 1 week after the treatment. Each treatment results in further hair growth reduction.
- Does it last "forever"? - No. The body can always grow new hair follicles, albeit slowly. You should expect that over several years you will require an occasional "touch-up" session.
- What does it cost and how long does it take? - This varies considerably depending on the type of hair and the location. In general, you should expect to require 4 or 5 sessions on average. You can pay as you go, per session, or purchase a series of treatments at a discount. Many areas can be treated in 4 week intervals. 8 weeks is recommended for the back as the hair grows more slowly there.
